Join a Team That's Making a Difference Every Day

For almost 50 years, the Tenants' Union of Tasmania (TUT) has been helping Tasmanians navigate some of life's most challenging housing situations.

As Tasmania's leading specialist tenancy law Community Legal Centre, TUT provides legal advice, advocacy and representation to tenants across the state, helping people avoid eviction, recover rental bonds, obtain repairs, seek compensation and secure fair housing outcomes.

Beyond individual casework, the organisation plays a critical role in tenancy law reform, public education and advocacy, working to improve housing outcomes for current and future generations of Tasmanians.

With a small, dedicated team and services extending throughout Northern Tasmania, TUT offers a unique opportunity to combine legal practice with meaningful social impact.

Unlike many legal environments, success at TUT isn't measured by billable hours. It's measured by the lives changed, housing secured and justice achieved for Tasmanian tenants.

Build a Career With Purpose

The Tenants' Union of Tasmania is currently seeking both Solicitor and Senior Solicitor to support the delivery of specialist tenancy law services throughout Northern Tasmania.

With opportunities available in Launceston and North-West Tasmania, we welcome applications from lawyers at varying stages of their careers who are seeking meaningful work, genuine flexibility and the opportunity to make a tangible difference in their community.

Reporting to the Principal Solicitor, you will provide legal advice, advocacy and representation to tenants while contributing to law reform initiatives, community legal education and broader access to justice outcomes.

More specifically, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Providing legal advice, referrals and casework support in residential tenancy matters
  • Assisting tenants to resolve disputes relating to evictions, repairs, compensation claims and rental bonds
  • Representing and assisting clients before TASCAT, courts and other tribunals
  • Undertaking legal research and policy analysis to support advocacy and law reform initiatives
  • Developing tenancy law resources, publications and community education materials
  • Delivering workshops, information sessions and legal education activities
  • Participating in stakeholder engagement, advocacy campaigns and policy discussions
  • Travelling throughout Northern Tasmania as required to support service delivery

Multiple opportunities are currently available, including both 12-month and 24-month contract positions.

Bring Your Legal Skills, We'll Help You Build the Rest

To qualify, you will need to be admitted as a legal practitioner in Australia and hold, or be eligible to hold, a Tasmanian practising certificate. Ideally, you will bring a minimum of two years of post-admission experience.

We also welcome applications from graduate and early-career lawyers who are passionate about social justice, community legal services and making a meaningful difference in the lives of Tasmanians.

Previous tenancy law experience is not essential.

We are interested in hearing from lawyers who bring strong legal foundations, advocacy skills and a willingness to learn, together with the ability to quickly acquire expertise in a specialised area of practice.

Additionally, the following skills and background will be highly valued:

  • Legal advocacy, litigation or dispute resolution experience
  • Strong legal research and analytical capabilities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience working directly with clients in complex or sensitive circumstances
  • Ability to work independently while remaining connected to a collaborative team
  • Strong organisational and time management skills
  • Confidence using technology and cloud-based systems
  • A current unrestricted Australian Driver's Licence

As our ideal candidate, you will be inquisitive, resilient and self-motivated. You will demonstrate sound professional judgement, know when to seek guidance and be comfortable managing your own workload in a flexible and largely autonomous environment.

This is a rare opportunity to join a respected Community Legal Centre where your work will directly improve the lives of Tasmanians while allowing you to enjoy the flexibility, autonomy and purpose that many lawyers seek but rarely find.

Enjoy the Flexibility and Balance You Deserve

Compensation will be offered in accordance with the SCHADS Award, with rates currently ranging from approximately $51.00 to $55 per hour (depending on skills and experience), PLUS Super along with a range of benefits including:

  • Relocation Assistance available for the right candidate
  • Flexible Full-time or Part-time Arrangements
  • Potential 4-day week and 9-day Fortnight Options

  • Genuine work-life balance with a standard 9 am - 5 pm work environment
  • Professional autonomy and responsibility
  • Meaningful social justice work with visible community impact
  • Exposure to advocacy, litigation and law reform activities
  • Supportive and collaborative team culture
  • Opportunity to live and work in Northern Tasmania!

At TUT, flexibility is part of the culture. Whether that's adjusting your schedule to meet personal commitments, working compressed hours or creating a work arrangement that supports your lifestyle, you'll be trusted to manage your responsibilities while maintaining exceptional service for clients.
